Piper Navajo lands on roadway safely after reporting a 'problem with right fuel pump'

נשלח לפני

Before making an emergency landing on a northeast Calgary street, the pilot of a Piper Navajo radioed the control tower to report a problem with the plane. "I've just lost the right fuel pump, that's why we're requesting 35 right," the pilot can be heard saying on the recording obtained by CBC News. The plane landed safely on 36th Street, just south of 16th Avenue N.E. No injuries were reported. (www.cbc.ca) עוד...

For a twin, I still wonder if fuel contamination / starvation was the root cause, a single pump failure obviously shouldn't have meant this so I'm guess the pilot lost the left shortly after the right was reported out.

Great job of flying by the crew, that being said Time is the big factor here, and if the airplane is not over gross weight, and out of c.g. limits this airplane will fly on one engine. The first thought comes to mind: to use x-feed to restore fuel pressure / fuel flow. even though The four electric fuel pumps and the firewall shutoff valves were on during run-up and takeoff and initial climb. When we first flew the original Navajo in 1966 and the Chieftain in 1973 we were invited to checkout this airplane by Piper Sales. Again credit to the crew for doing a fine job.
