Engine Certification: Meet the Flockers
A new analysis under way in the USA and Europe will determine whether "large" flocking birds - those weighing more than 1.13kg (2.5lb) each - are a growing threat to narrowbody aircraft and, as such, should be part of the engine certification criteria. 1 or 20 what difference is that going to make??? 1 bird is going to stop the turbine from working isnt it???
Not necessarily. I have inspected engines where, after cleaning out the mess, there was no significant damage, the engine was returned to service and flew until the next scheduled overhaul with no problems.
I have also seen the same type of engines that ingested the same type of bird that were basically scrap.
