F4J —
Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 333 (VMFA-333) McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II, in storage at Davis-Monthan AFB, the Air Force Material Command's (AFMC) 309th Aerospace Maintenance and Regeneration Group (309 AMARG). VMFA-333 was the last regular Marine squadron to operate the F-4 Phantom but finally transferred to the F/A-18 Hornet in October 1987. On March 31, 1992, Marine Fighter Attack Squadron (VMFA) 333 was deactiviated after more than 42 years of service. Occupying 2,600 acres, AMARG manages an inventory of more than 4,200 aircraft. Currently Aircraft Division activities include participation in F-4 regeneration for the Air Combat Command's Full-Scale Aerial Target (FSAT) or drone program. Many of the Phantoms seen in the background of this photo will meet their final fate as remote controlled targets for aerial and ground-based training and testing.
