I was a thinkin' the 380 needed a 200' runway width on account of the outboard engines hanging way out there. IAD only has 150'. Was I wrong in what I heard?

don't know if it's a limitation but, I see Qantas 380's using 24L at LAX

Maybe it's just a preference. I remember some earlier discussion about that 200' needful on account of the outboard engines hanging out so far and stirring up FOD. They sit out much further than the 747

Normally, the requirement is for a 200' wide runway. That said, FAA has Engineering Briefs for both the A380 (EB65A) and B748 (EB74A) that allow operations on a 150' wide runway as long as there are 50' stabilized shoulders. Airports that have routine service can apply for a Modification of Standard. Those of us that are simply listed as alternates have no specific requirements. The airline must work with the FAA and the airport to ensure it can operate safely. There are several other airfield considerations before even looking at the terminal capabilities.

Air France has served IAD with the 380 for awhile now-- IAD went through runway upgrades before the 380 service started.

doesn't the airports serving 380s need a 'turn still' (maybe misspelled) so they can maneuver?

Not sure about the turnstile; haven't heard that one, but I do know that is why they are restricted in a lot of places, because of room and gate accomodations.

Preacher has a good point but it is not the aircraft but the terminal's ability to process an A380.....500 off and 500 on, within a potential 90 minute turnaround.

If the station staff cannot process a regular processing of up to 1000 passengers each time a A380 turns up then it matters not a jot if the airfield can deal with the airframe. Turntables were designed for locomotives and it was a very simple solution to a problem of that time however a A380 does NOT have several A319's in tow does it?

Seems fitting for BA to use their new 'flagship' on the Washington service following the shameful way they retired Concorde. It would also be efficient for BA to use at least two A380's on the LHR-JFK route due to the high number of passengers rather than African routes. But who am I? Just one that observes things and wonders why etc...

It will be nice to see the 787 at PHL. The 787 will replace the 763 on the second daily run to/from PHL. (BA also used PHL as its first destination for its newly delivered 747-400 way back in 1989.)
