When I was in a Boston elementary school in the 1950's, the USA was in a so-called "Cold War" with Russia, and military fighter jets were, it seemed, always in the air, breaking the sound barrier with large booming sounds…and a couple of days a week, we had to practice atomic bomb drills, in which one student pulled down the shades, while the rest of us went to opposite side of the classroom from the windows and we all crawled under ancient wooden school desks, which must have been impervious to nuclear blasts...
