That is terrific news. If the ipad2 revolutionizes my life even HALF as much as the ipad did, then I will be pleased that it lived up to my expectation.

I bet this three-axis gyroscope version, coupled with the accelerometer, and compass will take the aviation capabilities to a whole new level.

I agree. In a few years, with enough hard work, it will probably be as good (if not better) than what we have today from companies like Garmin.

All we need now is it to interface with the Garmin 430/530 or G1000 via bluetooth. Then it would be perfect.

If you have a G1000 why would you want an iPad? It already is redundant, plus it has moving map, weather, terrain, traffic, taxi diagrams, and I believe plates are optional now?

G1000 won't fit in my J-3 Cub. Plus it wasn't certified with an electrical system.

Oddly, the G1000 thousands still lacks some important information which can easily be found in iPad aviation apps. For example, try finding an airport's traffic pattern altitude or whether it uses right or left traffic. Those are some of the reasons my iPad comes with me on every flight in G1000 aircraft.

I have a G1000 without WAAS. Cost from Cessna to upgrade to WAAS over 25K. Without WAAS no ADS-B. See the new program for Ipad, SkyRadar. They offer in addition to their program a hardware solution to allow the downloading of ADS-B traffic and weather, which is free. Basically what I am now paying XM over $700 per year. Cost from SkyRadar is just over 1k for the hardware. Foreflight is also working on a solution like this.

Fred, SkyRadar is great! One gotcha in using a ADS-B receiver (without an ADS-B transmitter in your plane) is that the only traffic data you will receive are aircraft in the vicinity of other ADS-B aircraft that may be around you. Thus aircraft near you, and not near an aircraft with ADS-B Out, won't show up on your display. That's a change from the way ADS-B worked in Alaska under the Capstone project. There, data for all detected aircraft was sent up via ADS-B.

Word is the FAA, even has approved it for Commerical Aviation use by pilots .. more computerized flight ... Now lets also track our flight on FlightAwarecom while we ride from point A to point B

Max:
Thanks for the clarification..I do have TIS but not TCAD. I was waiting on that with the Garmin 800 Traffic and then found out that in order to have all ADS-B I need that expensive WAAS.
This SkyRadar solution would at least eliminate the XM fee.

Fred, no question, SkyRadar with the external ADS-B receiver is a great way to get free weather. It's just too bad the FAA decided not to send ALL traffic to planes equipped with ADS-B receivers but no ADS-B transmitter. And I don't think most ADS-B receiver manufacturers make it clear that you won't get traffic threats for YOUR aircraft--unless you also have the ADS-B Out.

I agree with Max that the iPad brings a lot to the cockpit and I keep mine as a backup as well. I however, work for a small airline and flight instruct occasionally for a living. (Remember us?) I'm pretty disappointed that Apple didn't bring all of this in one package - instead opting to come out with "iPad 2" in LESS than a year from the original. It's an incredible resource, but after paying about a month's disposable income for the original unit and the software license: what the deuce? The real average pilot can't afford this kind of corporate gamesmanship and the few private pilots that can don't fly enough to capitalize on it. This is becoming a toy for the one percenters in GA.

@sayintentions -- are you asking that Apple wait a lot longer to release new technology? I'm not sure I understand your complaint. The reason they're so successful is because of their constant innovation. If you want late products that don't update much, you could certainly find that in the marketplace.

Much is made of the fact that TIS info won't be available with SkyRadar unless someone nearby has ADS-B Out. How distant from a ground station can an ADS-B Out aircraft be and still wake up a TIS broadcast? How far from the ground station can SkyRadar pick up a TIS signal once its awakened? Is East coast coverage so dense that TIS is pretty much always active anyway?
