Antarctica sightseeing flights from Australia: Qantas jumbo's cool day trip

נשלח לפני

The veteran 747 captain is one of only four Qantas pilots qualified to captain the airline's most unusual flight route – a 13-hour jaunt to Antarctica and back. Tour company Antarctica Flights charters a Qantas jumbo jet a few times a year to take tourists on a sightseeing tour of the world's coldest, most remote continent. It's an opportunity to get a bird's-eye view of this frozen wasteland and get a real sense of the awesome size and harshness of the landscape.… (www.msn.com) עוד...

What a bunch of whinging by other commentators. This is something interesting and air-related. Just because you've heard of it, doesn't mean everyone knows about it. It's also nice to hear of special 747 flights available out there as they dwindle. I'm really glad I was made aware of this article.

What does "whinging" mean? Is it an English word? What does it do?

It's a British English word. The American equivalent is "whining".

Thank you for clarifying the matter. I was unaware of this spelling version, thank you for explaining what I had never heard of this spelling for its current version before. It's good to learn something new every day.

According to Merriam-Webster:

Whinge isn't just a spelling variant of "whine." "Whinge" and "whine" are actually entirely different words with separate histories. "Whine" traces to an Old English verb, "hwinan," which means "to make a humming or whirring sound." When "hwinan" became "whinen" in Middle English, it meant "to wail distressfully"; "whine" didn't acquire its "complain" sense until the 16th century. "Whinge," on the other hand, comes from a different Old English verb, "hwinsian," which means "to wail or moan discontentedly." "Whinge" retains that original sense today, though nowadays it puts less emphasis on the sound of the complaining and more on the discontentment behind the complaint.

Wow, so many words for wailing and moaning...sounds like it really sucked to live in 16th century Britain.

Ha! You learn something new every day, eh?!
BTW as an ex-Brit myself but living in the US for well over 20 years, I knew both words, what they meant and their spelling!!

Try this. Chapter 1: https://www.amazon.com/Britannia-Brief-Scoop-Things-British/dp/0345509994

No one in the UK would use the expression British English! Only an American......
While English IS spoken throughout Scotland, Wales, England and Northern Ireland, Britain is a collection of these separate nations, all with their distinct foibles. And Scotland and Wales have their own languages in Welsh and/or Gaelic, in addition to English.

It would have been more correct to say either British or simply just English. No need to combine the words which then lose their true meaning.........

Much as I'd enjoy carrying this on, it is getting afar of the aviation topic. So I will stop.

But, the flat earth people say this isn't possible... They'll tell you the Antarctic treaty forbids people from going anywhere near the Antarctic... lol

They're just not allowed to fly near the edge of the dome there. 😂

I agree perhaps old wounds are fresh in people's mines who lost there loved one's back then. But to fly on a jumbo jet is a real thrill not many of the 747's are left in our skies now.

Sounds like they sell the middle seats? What's the point if there's no window? The window rotation only applies if you're in the set of seats by a window?

I want to be on one of these flights!

Very nice on the queen of the skies but I noticed the photo of MT Erebus there Qantas love rubbing in old wounds. Down there still on the lower slopes of MT Erebus lay's the wreckage still there of the grave yard of the Air New Zealand DC10-30 ZK-NZP that crashed there 35 years ago on the 28th November 1979 killing all the passengers and crew. Last year I did this sight seeing flight on the Qantas Jumbo jet and they fly right over this site and you can still see the tail and engine mount of the DC10-30 they point this out to passengers. Not a good feeling for the people taking this flight some are Kiwi's as well.

Yes, I bought the Mt. Erebus book when I was stationed with the Royal Navy in Auckland. I never did get to go that far south but had a pretty good 12-hour sortie on a NZAF Orion P-3 on fishery protection duties. We got about half way down and then headed north to catch some Chinese trawlers!.........
