Continental, United Pilots Seek To End Outsourcing To Regional Airlines
HOUSTON (Dow Jones)-Pilots at Continental Airlines Inc. and UAL Corp.'s United Airlines want to end outsourcing of flying to regional partners following their planned merger, a move likely to shake up the industry's already turbulent labor relations. Good luck with that.
I see some of the regional flying ending, but not all of it. Surely that wouldn't make sense, from a business stand point. It has to be cheaper to outsource the local short-hop flights that only require 50/70 pax.
Domestic flying is increasingly going to the regionals and outsourcing is still the cost-effective way to achieve this. Flow-back/flow-through agreements are the only way to resolve labor issues. Com on guys and gals....You really are nothing more than glorified bus drivers.
Good.. shut down these under-cutters for good. See the article about pilots and F/A's qualifying for welfare and food stamps? I'm not even a professional pilot but this needs to end.
Yes the regionals need to pay their employees a living wage. However I cannot see CO/UA operating a profitable mainline operation, to cities such as CHA, CHS, or MTJ. Also, will the corporate board approve such a move? This would cut into the profit margin, and the share holders would revolt. I work for Expressjet now and wouldnt mind going back into the mainline world, but this move would only put a different group of people out of work, who may or may not be hired by the new UA.
