American may have been struggling financially, but I've always considered it a first class operation.

On the other hand... USAir was lousy when it was Allegheny Airlines (aka "Agony Airlines")and Mowhawk, lousy when they merged and created USAir, and now lousy thiry years later.

Put 'em together and what have you got? A big, financially struggling, lousy airline.

This one story will wind up with at least 300 comments on it and all about the fairhaired boys of the West although Horton has started showing some gray. His mistake is that he didn't count on "MY GOOD FRIEND,DOUG PARKER" getting greedy and start nipping at his heel and making the end run around him.
StymieHo
Chris Donawho 1
LOL, if nothing else, this post turned into a historical account of the evolution of cell phones over the past 25 years!

Horton, et al, didn't have to agree to the merger. They hammered out a deal that was agreeable to all concerned. Because Parker is a smart businessman and trying to keep his airline profitable, do you truly believe that's a just reason to debase his reputation?
preacher1
preacher1 2
I really don't think he had much of a choice and took the best deal available, and will have a nice parachute. They were good friends while both were at AA together but Parker grew into his own eventually, and this is the end result. Can't say that it is wrong. I just think that Horton underestimated him. I realize you worked for Parker and have that to look to, but I don't have to like him. I have a lot of good friends at AA as well that probably won't fare well in this deal. That said, they haven't fared well under the BR deal either. I just peronally don't think this is anything about airline profitability. I think it is ego satisfaction in running the country's biggest airline, BUT, that's just my opinion.
AWAAlum
AWAAlum 1
We're all entitled to those, but I surely can't figure out how you arrived at yours. Do you have some inside information? It's important to remember that Parker, too, answers to the Board and he has to produce. I suppose it's safe to say ego may enter into it, but I think ego comes after pulling off a successful business deal that's good for the company and is not the motivation. I imagine most of us can't help but feel pretty good about ourselves when we accomplish a goal; and can you imagine engineering one of these proportions? This merger would never have been granted approval if it weren't thought to be beneficial. I suppose I could be entirely in the wrong here - but I seriously doubt it. Have a great week Preacher.

Let's just say there was some pointy end fill in after I retired and and across my 36 year career, there was closer than average alliance with a lot of AA folks, including both Parker & Horton in their early days. It will be interesting to see how it all plays out. You have a good one too. Just an added note. There is not a lot of love lost by a whole bunch of folks for Dick Anderson at DAL either but you have to admire what he has done for the airline itself. You won't please everybody. I hope Parker can do the same and there is not a bunch of smoke & mirrors in his past.lol

We the traveling consumer have less to choose from when we want to travel by air. Thank you whomever created this chart. Unless I missed some of the details, Continental Airlines went into bankruptcy protection in 1983. I was an employee at that time.
indy2001

It's probably the best that could happen for both airlines. AA gets an infusion of cash and a boss that labor is happy with (for now, anyway). US gets a major upgrade to their image and joins the elite. I don't think either airline would have been able to go it alone against the UA/CO and DL/NW megacarriers.

So we're down to 3 large international airlines plus SW (which seems to be gearing up for limited international service soon). Although I miss the heady days just before and after deregulation, four majors (plus a few independents) should should do us just fine. I doubt whether the Justice Dept. would allow any further consolidation for quite some time.

Why? So AAL and AWE can both stand alone against the United/Continental and Delta/Northwest giants? Sounds to me like you would rather have two mega-carriers instead of three.

Merge and purge; that will be the outcome. Bad idea. Should not be allowed to happen. Prices will go up, service down. Five to eight thousand jobs: gone. Duplicate city pairs: gone. Here begins the disasterous race to a single airline: AMERIFLOT.

Ameriflot.... Great.

I agree Harry, They are racing to a single USA airline. There is not many choices left and as they get bigger, less competition = way higher prices.

Doesn't much matter, another 5-10 years and fuel prices will decimate half the air travel we have today.
StymieHo

Spirit, SWA, Delta, United, AAL, Sun Country, Virgin American, others.... There's still plenty of competition to go around. I would presume the merger "fad" of late is over now. All the others got an opportunity to do it. Now American has been afforded the same opportunity to level the playing field, everyone wants to cry about it.

How strange business. When was the last time the weaker brand was saved just because "is still too prestigious to drop" while the stronger one has to dissappear...when it is the BUYER? If US Airways is actually buying AA, does it's not supposed to prevail as new carrier's name?
preacher1
preacher1 1
It is a merger and depending on which story you read, it is basically a 70/30 stock split with AA being dominant. Heck of a deal.
StymieHo
Chris Donawho 1
Regardless of the split, AAL's operating certificate, name-brand, established routes/gates around the world are FAR more appealing than AWE.... Speaking of AWE, they bought US Air and kept the US Air brand for the same reason.

from what I understand the customer service group will take the brunt of the merger related pain this time. Hope it's not too bad for them. After surviving several mergers I realize they are probably the best for the company in the long run, but it's always financially painful for a few employee groups. If American has been losing money big time for several years now and U.S. Airways has not been providing fat profits anyway so who in the world is putting the money for the 200-300 new jets on order. Granted some of the new things are leased but still billions have to change hands so who are the "brave" bankers, insurance cos. etc. that are lending the moneys, does anyone know.

That isn't what they did at all.

The government set up a compensation fund to make payments for losses from 9/11 to prevent people from suing AA and United into bankruptcy and dissolution.

The airlines received none of that money as evidenced by the rash of bankruptcy and massive losses the airlines had afterwards.

If it werent for America West buying the bankrupt US airways their cocky assed pilots wouldnt have a job-The binding arbitration wasn't good enough for them-The arbitrated decision on seniority was MORE than fair. The biggest mistake Parker made was not Canning every last one of the US air pilots when they started that crap about America West not fueling their jets in a safe manner-THE UNGRATEFUL bastards-THANK GOD FOR AMERICAN BECAUSE US AIRS THEIVING UNION USAPA WILL BE RIGHT OUT THE DOOR...MAJORITY RULES REMEMBER BOYS?-THE CACTUS SHALL REJOICE !!I happen to be the wife of one of "the fairhaired boys of the west" and have been for the past 17 yrs.Hes been with AMERICA WEST FOR 24 YRS NOW.They created a winner-WE were the first to pay back their 9/11 debt and made a huge mistake keeping the us air name-An east pilot actually shoulder rammed my husband on the concourse last month !We may be fair-haired , but at least we behave like the proffesionals we are and not like a bunch of arrogant whinny schoolgirls.

Laura, unless you are using a psuedonym, your last name is not Parker or Horton, and those are the fairhaired boys I was referring to.As far as the rest of your opinion, you are probably right, but in defense of the US pilots, unions do bring on the mentality that the world owes them a living and a company must give them lifetime employment. Truthfully, it kinda used to be that way to a degree but good bad or indifferent, he world changed with deregulation and junk bonds. That was the death knell for the working class.

I hear CO and UA pilots still only fly their original CO and UA equipment and routes. US has lots of Airbus products of which no AA pilot is cetified to fly so I would expect the same thing.
preacher1

Well, they only overlap on 12 routes so it may be a necessity that they do that. Not sure about now but AA has had Airbus in the past. That was an AB of some type that crashed up there in New Yourk, coming out of JFK about a month after 911. They may have some still qualified

They can't get rid of the Mad Dog fast enough, maybe Alegiant will take some and charge people $35 to bring a carry-on aboard and squeeze into a 30 inch pitch seat. But they can get you to Vegas for $49 bucks.

Horton's not going anywhere. I think Sparkie reported a lot more US Air management staying on, but I havent gotten that vibe either. A buddy of mine who manages AA's equipment stated none of his people are going away. In fact, no one is moving out of the FTW office. Horton will be Chairman, so technically, Parker will answer to him. The board steers companies in the right direction. CEO's, these days anyways, are simply puppets of the board's will. The board answers to stockholders. Management answers to the board, employees answer to management, etc.
preacher1
preacher1 1
Well, I can kinda agree with that but all releases that have come out have said that Horton will NON EXECUTIVE CEO and that Parker will be CEO. Horton also said himself that he is going away after all is complete, late this year or early 2014. It will all be interesting. Do you know the answer to my last question above about Parker?
StymieHo
Chris Donawho 1
Parker was CFO at America West. When they merged with USAir, he became CEO of the combined companies. He tried to work out a merger with Delta in 2007, but that obviously didnt come to fruition. Six years later, he bagged a big buck in AAL.

Horton will serve as a Non-Executive Chairman, which means he wont have a vote. But the CEO always answers to the board members, exectutive or otherwise. Once the merger is completed, Horton will take a monumental severance package and run to the hills.

I dont blame him. This airline business has turned into too much cut-throat.

If you gals had motivated AWE to get some real routes and fly a little further than the crows, AWE could have kept their namesake throughout all this. Instead, your company decided to buy another airline's stature. It's cheaper that way.

I understand that America West is near and dear to your hearts. You can remind this DFW boy that you bought us too, but the side of the planes will always wear AMERICAN (without the A if we let George W. have a say in it). Wayne's a big boy. He can eat crow just like any other grown up. Neither one of these airlines can stack up against the United/Continentals or Delta/Northwests of the world. They HAD to get together in order to survive. That was the point I made over a year ago. The same is true today. Neither one of these airlines had a snowball's chance in hell of competing with the giants.

Piedmont? Sparkie, cell phones still had cords attached to giant battery packs when that happened (1987 I believe). That's like saying, "It didnt work for PanAm, so it's a bad idea."

I wish them luck, and hope it goes better than the Piedmont Mainline merger a number of years ago... But then again, it is a different management team.

I don't believe the U.S. Airways Flight Crews have ever resolved the issues with America west Flight crews. I've been told the crews are kept separate. It will be interesting to see how that works out throwing the American crews into that mess.
