KMEM dedicates new $72 Million Tower

So, a new tower that is 150' taller is "nearly identical"? OK.....

Additionally -
"The old tower was commissioned in 1977. In the past 34 years, as Memphis International Airport has grown in size and number of operations, the FAA has added additional tower and radar positions.  The facility’s operational growth, addition of new air traffic control technology, and the airport’s additional runways and taxiways made the height and size of the old tower obsolete."

Well, Fedex didn't come to town until '73, and it sure didn't start as big as it is now. If memory serves correct, their growth then was what spurred the general Airpot expansion in the first place. Fred Smith originally wanted to base it in Little Rock but the city fathers there didn't have the foresight that Memphis did. As far as this tower goes, the contract was let in 2007, before the economic bubble burst. You can't build these things overnight. FedEx, like a lot of other companies suffered a downturn but survived and will grow back.DAL had the NWA merger in their plans for a good while so it was no surprise. I think Memphis and the FAA done good. If we don't start thinking positive and forward looking, the whole country will crumble, if it ain't too late already.

Agreed Wayne. I think our friends statistics may be correct in the short term as far as traffic being down, but then whose isn't in the lsst three years or so. As Delta moves out, or at least downscales which is understandable considering their operations in Atlanta, someone will move in. Thanks for your input, on point as always.

Um...excuse me Mr. BOI but these projects are paid for from airport user fees and other sources, not necessarily "your" tax dollars.

I still disagree that its a "waste". See the other comments and info regarding the amount of traffic, not just at KMEM itself but in the ARTCC space managed from there.

Traffic at Memphis is down and decreasing. The old tower was about 30 years old. I'm not opposed to upgrading technology but to demolish a simple 30 year old building to build an almost identical simple structure for $73 Million is wasteful. I pay a lot of aviation related taxes which is fine but this project seemes wasteful and more about creating short term construction jobs and less about filling a need for better ATC services in a market with decreasing air traffic. Factor in the new technology and this facility should employ fewer controllers, not more. None of this makes sense.

See my comment above about traffic. Like I said earlier. DAL is shifting things around but FedEx is/will be growing. In addition, read the COMPLETE article and find out about the new technology

I'm all for new technology that works and reduces labor costs. In this case no labor is being reduced. New technology can be incorporated into a 150' hollow tower and glass cab.

Traffic at MEM is way down. Even if FedEx increases (no evidence of that happening) it will take several years for overall traffic at MEM to increase. $73Million for a new tower doesn't pencil out.

Unless I am mistaken you are the guy that said in a comment on the Rick Hendrick crash that you had been flying for 30 years and never used brakes. I don't know how much work you do in/out of KMEM; best I remember you fly out of one of the smaller fields over there, thinking back to comments around the flood time earlier this year. I will not argue with you on the traffic count as, like I said earlier, DAL is changing things around since the merger. All I will say about them or FedEx is that I doubt you have insight to the corporate bowels of either company and they will not be revealing those plans until they are ready. That tower has been under construction for awhile and like any other infrastructure, needs replacing from time to time. Crap will happen but KMEM willl not go away. You are entitled to your opinion and I am entitled to mine but as one that flies big iron in/out of there from time to time, I am glad to see it and all the upgraded technology it brings with it.

I didn't say I had never used brakes. I said I never needed them to stop or taxi (I currently fly a Cessna 560XL XLS ... light aluminum to you I know). And I do know the top mngmt of FedEx. I've never flown out of one of the smaller fields over there, wherever there is? I've flown in and out of MEM several times recently.

Once again I'll restate my support for new technology so long as it works and brings a benefit. Tearing down a 30 year old hollow tower and building a new one just like it a few feet away makes no sense, to me.

That being said, I'm not that familiar with any small fields over there either although back during the sprinf floods I thought it was you talking about one. At any rate, all I can tell you regarding FedEx or DAL, look for some substantial announcements from them in the next 30 days. Look for a mini-hub for another major to be announced in there before long as some realignments get completed, more than likely to be handled by Pinnacle as well an announcement by a national FBO to make a grab on handling private traffic for Tunica.

With 4 runways, FedEx HQ, still a DAL(NWA) hub, and all that Tstorm activity that can come up out of nowhere, the tower and all the new stuff in it are very needful.
