Boy this is a sticky one....With the available information here as well as other places, it is not very difficult to find out what a number of people are up to, whether it's any of my business or not. One of the most secretive businesses in the world is located (North American HQ) a couple of miles from my office, and their jets use my airport. Obviously they are blocked , but I hear them talking to ATC all the time. Do they have a right to block information about where their planes are going? I think they do. They own the planes and anyone who knew where their planes were at a given moment could possibly gain insight into their private business activities, and I'm talking about a MAJOR MAJOR household name type of company. The same applies to college athletic teams as mentioned in the article. This is also BIG BUSINESS, and around signing day the booster club planes are all over the map - literally. What is the public interest in knowing the whereabouts of private aircraft? That is a rhetorical question I'd love for someone to discuss. Yes, I like to track and spot private aircfart as a hobby (just look at my photo list), but do I have a right to know details about their activity simply because they use public ATC services?......I don't think I do. But I'm open to be convinced otherwise.
Cheers - B

I agree, Brian... Good points. I also have a similar situation in my town/airport. KDEC is the global HQ of ADM, I see their jets every day and never see a public flight plan :) They are one of the main reasons we still have good airport infrastructure... they're stimulating the local economy and buying tons of jet fuel. They also make the damn ethanol that is mixed in our mogas, but that's another thread :)

But at least with their ethanol you can make a good Martini!
