I guess a good landing is one you can walk away from. Oh, and since the airplane is an E/AB I suppose he can repair it and fly again.

Of Course... Technically the Only part to rebuild an A/C legally is the Data Plate. That goes for any plane in the world... As long as you have the data plate you can rebuild it... Even if the Data Plate is the only thing that survives!

yup. When United donated an old737 to our maintenance school, they kept the data plate. It would never fly again, no matter how well we maintained it! (Although, for training prposes, we re-used the all the expensive fluids!)

Know what you mean but left out was only part needed to rebuild an AC is the data plate. Saw the result of one at a WW2 aircraft rebuild shop.

No I did not leave the 1 required part to rebuild the plane... All it needs to rebuild the plane is the "DATA PLATE" - Without the Data Plate, it is not considered an Aircraft and cannot fly! Everything else can be replaced at different times or all at once, but you cannot replace the Data Plate!

Down below, James Willich posted an explanation of what happened. It makes it fully understandable. Gliding to an airport, unable to see clearly, and adrenaline pumping, I can understand arriving high and hot and that plane just refused to be forced to the runway. It held together very well and the pilot walked away with a good story.

Stills from the video show a completely clear canopy. even when gliding, why would one bank hard and introduce so much yaw at that elevation ? I've read that the pilot stated engine failure and oil blocking view .. but that's just not the case.

It doesn't take much oil to obscure vision. I've been there. And if it's clean, it would be very hard to tell in a photo. If you expect oil to be black, you're going way too long between changes.

The pilot may have been awake and alert after the crash but the question is if he was during the landing attempt. I will say that must be a tough little bird to protect the pilot through that and still resemble an airplane.

From what I understand the propeller let go and coated his windscreen with oil. He said he was too hot, but couldn't see anything. He knew there was a berm at the end so his decision was to semi-ground loop instead of punching straight in.
All-in-all, pretty good piloting, considering.

You can put a coat of vaseline on your car's windshield and it's going to look clear from outside. Different story trying to drive with it though...

Take a close look at video, stopping the action, can be seen that canopy is clear and pilots head can be seen with no obstructions.

A nice full side or forward slip would have worked nicely on this glide approach and may have resulted in an earlier touchdown and at least you could see out the side windows? All in all the pilot lived and with minimum damage.

Maybe a kit plane he was doing acrobatics in. Maybe redesign the stick so it doesn't break off after repeated jerkingss around leaving the pilot with only a rudder. Didn't see any control surfaces moving. Cute helmet.

everyone keeps saying the pilot said there was oil on canopy and he couldn't see ... yet even after all that dust cleared the window was still very clear, here where I live dust sticks to oil ??? I could say I've been to Mars .. doesn't make it so. He says oil blocked his view??? I just hope he doesn't fly near my home

When I was talking about fear of flying, someone said that people ask him where the 'best place to sit' is. He usually says, that depends on what your goal is. Do you want to survive, or die. Surviving a large plane crash usually means living with survivor's guilt, and life altering injuries. He said he tells people he'd rather die. He has a very dark sense of humor, as so many plane crashes now have high survivability, but he's also right. Surviving can mean a lot of things.

Seems like touch down point was way past the mid field (~ 3,800ft total if I got the right airport); not using the glide slope? Also, wonder why it seemed the plane was so much out of control? Control problems (i.e. aircraft equipment failure / part broken) or just strong winds? Now I bounce a bit the 172 still on my landings still from time to time, but I keep the yoke back a bit till I can let the float out gently. I.e. why not a go around after missing your touch down point (or so it seems) by so much...?
