Boeing's decision of the decade: Does it build the 797?

It's only January, but Boeing executives are already closing in on one of their most important decisions of the year: whether to plough an estimated US$15 billion (NZ$22 billion) into a new jetliner family. The aircraft nicknamed the 797 would feature Boeing's first all-new design since the 787 Dreamliner's unveiling in 2004, while shoring up its product line against recent Airbus advances. boeing has been sitting on their hands for far too long and have missed their best entry timing. Airbus continues to produce longer and longer range 321's that have only the virtue of being first- they are here or are coming very soon, single aisle as they are- a slight discomfort. The apparent market success of the 321 long rangers with the possibility of 797 ought to kill off 380 future sales once and for all. Expect transatlantic narrowbody flights much like subways cars with seatbelts and drink service. What is Boeing's next new bid idea, you know the one that gurantees corporate survival 30 years hence.....?

I'm wondering if it is already too late for Boeing to capture a significant chunk of the MOM market. They haven't even made a decision on whether to develop a 797, and once that is green-lit, it will take years of development and certification work.

It took seven years to get the 787 into service, and while that program involved technologies and materials that are now better understood, a from-scratch 797 will undoubtedly face unexpected hurdles as well. Few complex projects are ever on-time, on-budget.

Meanwhile Airbus is going to fluff up the A321LR and see their order backlog grow. Airlines that are still on the fence and hedging their bets are going to get nervous about being at the end of a very long line, and risk having to wait many years to get airframes or pay a premium by going through a leasing company.

Boeing had already delayed it for way too long, In my opinion they should and could have prioritize 797 first before pushing 737 Max. 797 should and could been a parallel development for 787 similar to back when they developed 757 and 767...
In my opinion, Boeing had been slacking behind Airbus since 777... some say it have to do with Boeing kept some high ranking MD-commercial division officers.
Boeing had forgot, the success of 707, 747, 757 and 777 were due to they were the first to offer such type of aircraft, not because they were superior in anyway compared to others.

Agree 100%. I've talked 767/757 pilots and we agreed that had Boeing had the foresight to co-develop their 767 replacing 787 with a 757 replacing 797 the only problem they would have right now is what to do with all the money they'd be making. My favourite airliner is and shall always be the 757, and it pained me when Boeing dropped yet another ball by killing the line so early. Now that everyone and their dog is clamoring for them, Boeing finds itself chasing Scarebus to bring a product to market. Such a shame.
