New Technology Brings Business Jet Operating Costs Back To Earth
Traditionally, new engines are assigned a “time before overhaul” (TBO), generally up to 5,000 hours of operation or so, before they must be stripped down, inspected and upgraded as needed — a time-consuming and expensive process. But new Silvercrest jet engines under development by Snecma, a French manufacturer, will be delivered with no designated TBO. More than a few GA, and I suspect many airline operators have and have had "on condition" inspection programs that eliminate TBO requirements on both an hourly and calender basis. These programs use trend monitoring, engine oil analysis (soap tests), and borescope inspections to determine engine condition and track the typical signs of a deteriorating engine core. When they fail to meet program parameters, it's time for an overhaul. I have flown several Garrett nee Honeywell powered aircraft on MSP that got engine overhauls before TBO because trend monitoring identified out of parameter issues, and they were removed from service. TBO is no longer as restrictive as it once was, due to monitoring and maintenance programs. Still a mechanic here.
There is a lot that can be seen data wise but a tear down is the only way to be sure whats going on inside. There is places where you cannot get data from that will tell you what you need to know. Been there done that ex mechanic here.
Sounds like a sensible thing to do, get those costs under control but don't over look safety!
