Lawsuit alleges Boeing tried to blame 737 captain in door plug blowout incident

Submitted
A lawsuit against Boeing has alleged that the US manufacturer “attempted to shift blame” onto an Alaska Airlines captain for mistakes made that contributed to a door plug separating from the aircraft midflight in January 2024. Captain Brandon Fisher, who safely landed the Alaska Airlines Boeing 737 MAX 9 on January 5, 2024, following the door plug blowout, filed papers in Oregon’s Multnomah County Circuit Court on December 30, 2025, seeking $10 million in damages. Considering I spent many years working for Boeing (and McDonnell Douglas) it really pains me to read this type CYA non-sense from Boeing. A Company, I have always held in high regard.
LeanderWilliams
Having worked for Boeing, you were probably more aware than others of the CYA atmosphere being prevalent in industry. I learned that long ago in my 52 years in Corporate America. As Ronald Reagan taught us with trickle-down economics, s**t doesn't flow uphill.

If this is the first time that you have noticed that there was something wrong at Boeing, I would hazard a guess that most people (including the FAA, NTSB and FBI) would say that you have not been paying attention for the last twenty years or so.

I do not see anything in Erik Bruner's post that suggests this is the first time they have noticed something was wrong at Boeing.

He closes with, "A Company, I have always held in high regard." It been quite a while since I could make that statement. And while I have never been an employee, my great uncle was plant manager at Renton for many years where he showed me the 1st 707 Air Force One in 1962 just after it was painted, several family members owned stock, and I have worked for many years as an engineer for a company that supplies flight test equipment to Boeing and the rest of the industry. Just saying...

I had no clue the PIC had a side gig reinstalling components for an MRO operator.

How can the pilot be blamed for this, unless he does the maintenance of the aircraft himself. He's an aviator not an engineer. How can he be held responsible for a rivet failure, surely that's down to the manufacturer of the aircraft? Is that why Boeing are trying to shift the blame away from themselves? Cutting costs by using substandard parts?

I don't see anything to suggest that Boeing were blaming the crew. Boeing's statement that it “...should not be held responsible for injuries because its products were improperly maintained or misused by persons and/or entities other than Boeing” surely refers to the airline. Boeing were suggesting that it was a maintenance issue. It's Alaska Airlines who should be suing.

Probably going to be an out of court settlement for an undisclosed sum.

Yes, I agree - the Captain needs his retirement bonus.

Read the complaint. It's a real stretch that Boeing tried to specifically blame the captain. This lawsuit won't go anywhere.

How could this be DEI?
I guess "likely" means you have no proof.

What's even funnier is the FBI informed him and his FO that Boeing was trying to do some shifty stuff toward them.

Explain how this is DEI. Let's see if you know anything other than the talking points and buzzwords you regurgitate like a good little boy.
