Video of ANA hard landing resulting in fuselage damage

An ANA 767 had a hard landing that crumpled the fuselage. "Google Translate" translation of the Japanese video description: 20 minutes around 1 pm 20 Sun, (193 passengers and crew) All Nippon Airways Boeing 767 flight 956 from Beijing, at the time of landing big swing to the Narita Airport, damaged a portion of the fuselage on impact when landing. There was no injury to the occupant guests - It. Discovered the injury had been a mechanic inspect the aircraft after landing. Have been… (www.youtube.com) עוד...

The pilot porpoised on landing. The nose gear is classified as an auxiliary gear designed to aid in maneuvering on the ground. It is not a landing gear. Early 767-300s had a weak spot in the fuselage where you see the damage. American Airlines has had 2 767-300s damaged. The first was in South America and the second was in London. I saw that airplane as it taxied in. American ferried both airplanes back to Tulsa and replaced that section of the fuselage. The temp repair to ferry consisted of 4 long (20ft plus) angle iron pieces placed lengthwise on the fuselage and bolted through the fuselage to large steel plates inside. Good for one takeoff and one landing. The longest lead time part was the new fuselage section from Japan because it had to have American's polished aluminum skin.

Robert: Got a stupid question. I am assuming they had to stop somewhere coming in. Do you know if they had to re-do those plates on that intermediate stop or were they for the whole trip.lol

Based on the damage view from the video, I wondered if that plug section could be replaced. It's odd, the hard landing looked to be well within the parameters of a hard test landing that Boeing would conduct themselves in the development process. I guess it won't "buff right out". Do 757s have the same issue, or just the widebodies?

I'm shocked that the nose strut and tires took that.

I'm suprised that the nose gear held up, but as the old saying goes, any landing you can walk away from is a good landing.

Yes, but being able to reuse the plane is a bonus.LOL

Both airplanes were flown nonstop to Tulsa. An AA mechanic in London said that if they had to land somewhere other than Tulsa the aircraft would have to be repaired at that location. They waited until the weather was perfect.

Does appear to be a good crosswind from the right since the smoke takes off across the runway pretty fast. But could be wash off the plane. But I don't see any tire smoke making a go for the right at all. No tail wind present watching smoke either. So pretty much appears he got a gust under his right side that lifted him when fixated on planting the plane or pretty close to stall. Of course that's the excuses. Bet is on second in command taking the landing and he had a air craft carrier for most of his time and landings. He sure got a good bounce planting the main gear.

The touchdown of the mains, while bad, was recoverable. It seemed the Pilot Flying panicked and shoved the nose wheel down, causing the buckle. Turned a bad landing into a mess! Doing a video blog on "the art of landing" soon--gonna be including this one, lol!

I dont think you read the comment correctly. I think he means that if it was an Airbus, it would crash or something. (which is wrong) Im a Boeing fan, but Airbus' are fine aircraft as well.
danishnelson
Danish Nelson -2
So what your saying is that (God Forbid) that if it was made Airbus is would have been destroyed though, sense it's Boeing, its Built Better?

I am Boeing lover too, only aircraft manufacturing company I like. But what does a plane being hit on the runway hard determine what company built it by?

preacher1 1
Who is to say which would be better in that situation. That was hard landing and I would have wanted to have been in that plane. We weren't in the cockpit so we don't know the reason for it but the aftermath speaks for itself. It will be awhile before it flies again, if ever. There can't be no estimate given on that, only cost plus.

OK, you fly the Airbus and I'll fly the 777 and we'll find out.

Not typed and ain't gonna be, at least I don't think.lol BUT, that said, I'll give the devil his due. Most of us are Boeing fans, rightfully so growing up with them, but not many cared for Japanes cars when they they first started showing up and love 'em or hate 'em, the got their market share. Same with the Bus. They are here and making inroads. Since I'm pretty much retired now, I don't have to fly 'em.In agreement with you though, from what I have heard about them, I don't like 'em.

I'd like to see how a 787 would fair in this scenario. A metal fuselage can buckle to absorb a shock, but a composite fuselage simply snaps when it reaches its yield point.
Av8nut
Michael Fuquay 3
As an engineer, the metal will buckle sooner than composite because it has a lower YIELD strength (when deformation begins). However, they both have comparable Ultimate strengths (when the part breaks/shears).

Without knowing exact values and calculations, I imagine the composite fuselage would be more resilient in this situation.
ckevinhamel
Kevin Hamel 1
I would agree with you, Michael, but I recently took the Boeing plant tour for the new 787s. My question is if there is an inherent weakness at the join locations for each of the sections for these sort of landings? I would certainly hope not, since I'm not an engineer. I guess we'll all find out in about 20 years.
lboyette
Lloyd Boyette 0
That Pilot will get fired (or at least should). However, I don't feel that's a " Crack " ... it's a " Buckle " in the skin that appears to have held. That hit was hard enough to cause a ripple in the skin where the Fuselage Frames and Stringers compressed to cause that buckle. It's just like you crushing a Coke can by banging it against the counter top. Glad all was safe.

The brakes may have been on when he landed making the plane stop rapidly their by making the plane jump forward causing the damage.
