Airbus May Open Assembly Line in U.S.

נשלח לפני

Airbus SAS, whose parent lost out to Boeing Co. (BA) in a U.S. tender to supply refueling aircraft, may add a final assembly line in the U.S. to buoy sales in the world’s No. 1 market for single-aisle planes, an executive said. (www.bloomberg.com) עוד...

how dare they consider hiring out of work americans... no way no how, not in my country.

Now that they no longer have a tanker contract here, it will be interesting to see if they set up in a right to work state...such as Kansas where Boeing is looking to shut down their facility or Texas where defense manufacturing has dropped off.

Competition at it's best like it has always been. Now will it seem fair if we go over to France and start an Assembly line there?

If they build here it will be because it is cheaper for the same reason that BMW, Honda, Toyota and Nissan set up factories here. European socialism has been our friend...as long as it is confined to Europe. States here will give tax breaks and other incentives to keep open or reopen American aviation industry, but the opposition will not come from Boeing but from the unions.

Now that I think of it it would also bring more jobs as well what we really need the most.

Wahat will really be interesting is if AMR sheds Tulsa plus the exodus that Boeing will shed at Wichita, where AB already has an engineering prescence. Entire region just ripe for picking with experienced people

Mhm then it's take what you can and basically want from there on.

I left the AMR/Tulsa connection to your first hand knowledge...it would be nice if it is convertible to an assembly facility, but never being there have no idea of what it would take. You are right though, lots of expertise should be available which will certainly be needed if AB comes up with an upgrade program of some sort for existing 319 and 320s.

I think it would be convertible; not set that way right now but could be done fairly easy I think. I don't know what all Boeing has at Wichita, let alone would they sell it to a rival, but AB already has an engineering prescence up there. By the time AB makes a decision, all should be known about those 2 areas. I don't think the facility would be that big a deal to them as far as having to build one, but having such a skilled work force would be a plus.

In addition, 10-15 years back, there was an MD assembly plant at Tulsa that got closed down. Navistar bought it some years back and was making school buses up there. Don't know if they are still going with that or not.

Airplanes sold in the US are sold in dollars. Since Airbus' expenses are in Euros they incur some type of foreign exchange issue on everything bought and paid for in dollars. A US final Assembly program would assist Airbus by matching revenues and expenses in the same currency. They will still take foreign exchange hits for the basic pre-final assembly work and when they report their earnings (as unrealized in Euros), but from a cash and foreign exchange hedging perspective they will be ahead of the game.

As they are really making some inroads into the U.S., it only makes sense for them to do this. Kinda like GM and Toyota a few years ago, and we all got better cars, on all brands, for that because of the competition. AB has started waking Boeing up and it will moreso if they open over here. The only question is when and where.

I can see this from many different angles, one is competition to US Plane Makers as being bad, and good from the point of view of employing us workers, Bad because it would be exporting profits, but good again because as they import parts and supplies, they will be taxed accordingly.

Many angles here but right now, jobs are needed more than anything.

Since the government sold us out with NAFTA we need to embrace almost anybody willing to operate here and provide jobs.

I agree; most all foreign auto plants have 1 or more plants here in the US. $ are $. Better to have profits go overseas than jobs.

Mobile, AL would be an ideal spot for EADS. The relationship already exists, tremendous infrastructure at a retired AF base, great climate, greater people.

What base was at Mobile?

Brookley Air Force Base was decommissioned in the '66-'67 timeframe. Now called Mobile Downtown,KBFM, the airport has outstanding capabilities and several big players in the commercial industry are located there.

**** WELL, WHY NOT!! SINCE HUGE AMERICAN COMPANIES HAVE OPERATIONS SET UP IN OTHER COUNTRIES and THEY HIRE OUT THEIR OWN COUNTRY'S NATIONALS, WHY NOT HAVE AB SET UP SHOP HERE AND HIRE SKILLED AMERICAN WORKERS, ESPECIALLY ONES THAT HAVE EXPERTISE IN THIS FIELD; AND LAID OFF FROM THEIR OUT-SOURCE JOBS (HAY, WHAT GOES AROUND, COMES AROUND)! AA IS LOOKING TO PURCHASE AIRBUS AIRCRAFT, AMONG OTHER CARRIERS, MAKES SENSE TO HAVE A QUALIFIED MAINTENANCE AIRBUS FACILITY HERE IN THE US. AN EMPTIED and NO LONGER USED MD-80 FACILTY SUCH AS LONG BEACH, or STL WHERE BOEING ONCE HAD A HUGE OPERATION WHEN IT TOOK OVER M.DOUGLAS'S OPERATION, BACK IN THE DAYS! STLOUIS SEEMS A GOOD PLACE W/A NEWLY REDISGNED AIRPORT AND FIELD, and THE "FACTORY" WOULD BE ON SIGHT OF THE ARPT. MAKES SENSE.

Yup I worked for a British company once (in a different industry than aircraft) and ur are right , it all spends the same. The only negative thing was the layoff. I was told (about going home time) "Make sure you take all you things with you because this iast you last day". Well I didn't mind because I had taken the job to keep the wolf away from the door anyway. I danceed out of there.
