The threat of these bombers to Russia pretty much ended the cold war. " Peace through Superior fire power ". Nice photo! I live in between what was Plattsburgh Air Force Base (PAFB) and what was Griffiss Air Force Base. As a kid seeing these monsters flying in the sky was just awesome. As a private pilot I have landed at both former bases, and seeing the outline of these planes on the pavement of the once flight line is just awesome as to the size of these planes. I think the outline was formed by the shade from these giants or deicing agents?

Flew on Cs and Ds out of U-Tapao between '69 and '70; ECM - we Jam the Sam!! The Hs were on the alert pads before I left the Air Force in late '70.

PeterQuadagno: I also worked on the D Models on Utapo Airfield in 1968-1969. Utapo is now Utapo International Airport. A lot of changes over there

Robin Rebhan: I almost got stationed at Plattsburgh but phased out the B-58 Hustler so I got discharged 71/2 months early

Great aircraft with great history. Beautiful & elegant. Unfortunately, rare guest in Asia, not easy to catch.

Was stationed at Loring AFB From 1974 to 1976. Stationed at Griffiss AFB from 1988 to 1993. Been TDY to K I Sawyer in January of 1991 and have been TDY to Plattsburgh. Loved watching the Buffs fly. Even been next to the end of the runway at Loring when one was landing.

Majestic shot! Just imagine - from 1952 until 2042?? That's getting your money's worth.
Dick Darnell
Flew on B and D’s out of Castle AFB, CA 1958-60. Castle was the first to get the B-52 and trained the majority of their crews. In early 1957, three of our planes (one from each squadron 328, 329 & 330) flew non-stop around the world.
Art Scott
I had a route on I think Hwy 36 northern Kansas and these boys would fly low (I think smoker runs) and come up behind me and scare the shit out me. 1979-1982

Great shot of the mighty BUFF!
I flew as the Radar Navigator (I think they're now called Weapon Systems Operators) in the G model out of Barksdale AFB, LA and Wurtsmith AFB, MI in the 70's and 80's. "Fought" the Cold War and had some unique experiences in that beast. Strangely enough, my father was a B-52 pilot in the early 60's.
Edward Peitso
I remember in the early 60’s, the new strategy was low level flying. Our Minnesota farm was right under one of the pactice bombing runs. Several times a week B-52s, B47s, and B-58s flying directly overhead at about 1500 foot altitude This was during 1960-1962 I believe. As a 16-18 year old, it was absolutely thrilling to see and feel those planes flying directly overhead.
John Burtis
The primary USAF aircraft for power projection anywhere on the globe. They are a tough aircraft possessing a rugged frame and were constructed in Boeing's heyday. I have always felt that our lives intersected so many times and in the end, we are both survivors of budget approvals, peace "dividends", distant wars and winning the peace, however transitory and elusive. Give me the hook so I can call on these beautiful BUMF's for assistance, forever. I have always loved these sleek eight engined jet bombers.
Angel Negron
As a security policeman in the USAF back in the early 70's I used to provide security, as a walking sentry out on the tarmac with an M-16 for both the B52 and the KC-135 at K.I. Sawyer AFB up in Marquette, Michigan during the winter months. That was my first duty station in the Air Force. What a way to break-in a Puerto Rican walking around those B-52's during the cold winter months. I literally froze my buns off. But it was really an honor to have done so. From there I was off to CCK Airbase in Taichung, Taiwan where there the weather was much more favorable and only dealt with the C-130's.
John Heinz
I worked swing shift from March 1951 to March 1954 at the Boeing Flight Test Center in Seattle preparing the XB and YB 52s for their test flights, flown by Tex Johnston.
Bill Fitton
Wish they made more appearances in the states!
