I don't know how far you can get on 2,000 rupees ( a month's pay for most - about $20 bucks.

There is a growing middle class in India, and there are also some people who are actually rich, even according to our standards. Let's say 20% of the population has the money to travel by plane, that means over 240 million people, as India has more than 1.2 billion inhabitants.

Possibly, but I don't see a growing middle class, only a small percentage of wealth concentrated around city centres and a huge proportion of the populace never getting out of their own parrish's. There may be a significant number of tourists but they don't hang around very long. However, you are correct if even 3% of population travel by air, that's still a lot of pax.

Have a look at the CIA World Factbook about the economic situation in India.

Ok, I'll give it a look. Having flown into and stayed in just about every city in In India for over 11 years I got a pretty good sense of the local economics, private and government. I still stand by comments.

Dear friend Highflyer1950, with utmost respect to your valuable 11 years spent in my country , is this what you learnt that a month's pay for MOST is $ 20 ! ? Roughly Rs. 1300 @ Rs. 65.50 to one US$ .
Wonder where U spent all those 11 years ! And during which era ?
Please check stats again carefully. Whether of those 11 years or of now .
Yes , there can be some disparity between reality and gpvt. data , which is as good here as that of your country or any country. But $20 or Rs. 1300 ! That is laughable.
Or U want to claim the benefit of "typo" and want to add a zero or some other digit somewhere ?
The question of new market for aviation will be to study the viability of Rs. 2000 per hour and what are or will be the exclusions or in short , like any where else , what is going to be in the fine print .

Thanks for setting me straight on the increase in pay. It was more comparable to a good portion of the population that unfortunately do not make a fair and decent living and when compared to your population numbers, it would be a larger percentage that would make international air travel out of reach. India is moving up fast, indeed, but my experience is with talking with the shop owners, the service industry, the taxi drivers and not the wealthy.

And you are correct in that the average monthly wage is now up to about $56 USD per month. Still I don't see many of the average workers airlining around the world any time soon.

Dear friend Highflyer1950 , I am surprised about your assumption that Indian Govt. is planning to create a fly at door steps scheme to let a taxi driver or a vegetable vendor or a domestic char woman fly.
I guess in some ways even the lower income group of USA will never be able to travel by air , what ever scheme is evolved !
